Acai berries and their antioxidant potential

Did you know Acaí berries or simply Acaí ? This small fruit is considered one of the most nutritious and healthy berries of all, in fact, it has been part of the basic diet of the Indian tribes of the Amazon for hundreds of years due to its fantastic properties.

Its appearance is similar to that of purple grapes, but with the characteristic flavor of tropical berries, a mixture of wine and chocolate flavor. It is a fruit typical of Brazilian lands (although it is also found in Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador) and is obtained from the Asai palm, which usually grows in humid and flooded areas. However, despite being a native fruit of Brazil, its reputation is increasing throughout South America; in fact, in countries like Peru, it is used to combat skin disorders.

Acai berries, a superfood?

Acai ( Euterpe oleracea ) is known by experts as a “superfood” or a “megafruit” due to the highly beneficial properties attributed to it due to its chemical composition rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals . In fact, it is a fruit that is widely studied by science today because it is believed that it may have benefits that help reduce the development of cancer and certain tumors.

It is believed that the antioxidant properties of Acai berries are a consequence of the areas in which it grows, the tropical regions near the equator . In these areas, ultraviolet radiation (UVA) is much more powerful, which makes the fruit create a large number of substances to protect itself from oxidation: the aforementioned antioxidants . Of these, the most prominent are anthocyanins. Thus, roughly speaking, many studies have shown that the antioxidants present in Acai pulp carry out effects at the level of cell signaling, enzymatic activity, reduction of inflammatory cytokines, gene regulation, etc., being one of its main qualities the functional maintenance of the body’s antioxidant pathways. In fact, various studies have been able toassociate the consumption of Acai with an increase and improvement in blood flow and better vascular health, which could reduce the risk of cardiovascular events.

The other properties of Acai berries

Although the antioxidants are the most notable components of Acai, it also consists of other compounds with beneficial properties that we should know. Among them we can highlight its concentration in calcium, iron, vitamins A, E, C, B1, B2 and B3, fiber and omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids. In the case of the latter, we are talking about essential fatty acids that intervene in lowering LDL or harmful cholesterol, while helping to maintain normal levels of HDL or beneficial cholesterol. In fact, its composition in these fatty acids is very similar to that of olive oil, so its properties are very similar, also intervening favorably in the function of the immune system,relief of arthritic pain and atherosclerosis, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties and reduced risk of heart problems.
